Our incredibly kind and attentive team naturally weave our rich tapestry of traditions and culture into each experience, from the early morning Royal Mocha’s on safari to the sharing of stories around the boma fire; it’s the diverse flavours of Africa infused into every meal and the care and love taken in preparing every dish for our guests; the imparting of generational wisdom and knowledge about our region, the interesting history of how Madikwe Game Reserve came into being and the thriving ecosystem that now exists here.

Every aspect of our guest experience is thoughtfully curated, with respect for nature and our guests.  We are conscious of our actions and pay careful consideration to our impact on this pristine environment, taking every opportunity to reduce consumption, eliminate wastage and single use plastics wherever possible.  By hand picking leafy greens from our purely organic garden we are further able to reduce packaging going into landfill while providing our guests with a promise of the freshest organic produce.

There is something so soothing about an early morning safari.  The way the landscape is bathed in the suns’ golden embrace; the crisp air on your cheeks; the adventure of tracking the animals in their natural environment and the rush of excitement as you find them, but just being in nature and sharing space with these magnificent creatures brings about a sense of calm and gratitude.

A safari experience at Royal Madikwe is an education in the intricate relationships between nature and it’s inhabitants.  Everything from the smallest insects, birds, bushes and tree’s to the largest mammals contribute to keeping the balance of nature intact.

We too, are part of nature and our being here, in the vast wilderness of Africa, carries a great responsibility.  Our natural spaces must be respected and cared for.  Our guides are mindful of their interactions with wildlife, respecting the animals by observing them without disturbing their natural behaviour.

Each experience is more special than the last and no two sightings are the same.  Whether it’s trying to keep up with a pack of African Wild Dogs on a hunt, tracking down Cheetah, witnessing one of the last remaining wild Rhinos, or simply gazing on in silence at the intimate social interaction of a herd of Elephants.  There is truly something magical about a safari experience at Royal Madikwe.

...and what would a morning on safari be without a coffee break in the middle of the wilderness?

An array of delectable freshly baked cookies and muffins, accompanied by fruit, juice, tea / coffee and hot chocolate are laid out as a refresher between sightings for you to enjoy.

We highly recommend trying our Royal Mocha, infused with Amarula ~ such a delightful treat to round off an exciting morning adventure.

We’re sharing our recipe here so that you can enjoy a taste of Africa at home this weekend!

ROYAL MOCHA RECIPE
½ Cup freshly brewed Coffee
Add 2 scoops Hot Chocolate powder and stir thoroughly
Add 40ml Amarula (A Creamy liqueur made from African Marula Fruit)
Top up with Full Cream Milk and mix together

Sip slowly and savour the flavours of Africa!

Here's a tip from our Travel Designers about packing for your upcoming Summer Safari.

Summer is our rainy season and we experience some of the most breath taking thunderstorms in the Southern Hemisphere, which can continue for 10 minutes or up to 2 hours. As Madikwe is a semi-arid area, with an average annual rainfall of only 500mm, it does not typically rain every day and thunderstorms generally occur in the afternoons.  We've got you covered with blanket lined ponchos to keep you dry and comfortable on safari.  Summer Storms may sometimes cause disruptions to the wifi and mobile phone connectivity, which in all other cases are reliable.

Daytime temperatures can vary from 25°C to 40°C, with an average of 31°C.

Light cotton / linen fabrics are recommended for the hot daytime temperatures and a light, warm jumper for the game drives. Both long and short trousers, summer dresses, swimming trunks / costume and open toe sandals are recommended. Comfortable, closed walking shoes are a necessity for Bush Walks and evening strolls between the Clubhouse and your Villa.  Don’t forget a sun hat, sun glasses, sunblock & lip balm, your camera, charger & extra memory cards as well as your journal for documenting all your special moments, plus a tote bag for carrying all your essentials along on safari.
