As the seasons shifted, so too did a few chapters within our own story. With much anticipation, we recently welcomed a new management couple whose experience, values and vision for Royal Madikwe were the perfect fit ~ and, in many ways, even more than we could have asked for. It’s therefore with such pleasure that we introduce Greg and Adri, the dynamic duo now at the helm of daily life at the lodge.
Together, they bring over 30 years of lodge management experience to the team. Greg’s technical expertise, problem-solving skills and passion for food and beverage, combined with his professional field guide qualifications, make him a remarkably versatile leader. At his side, Adri’s strong administrative background, meticulous attention to detail and warm approach to hosting guests create the perfect balance. Their shared dedication and genuine love for lodge life make them a wonderful addition to the Royal Madikwe family and we’re thrilled to have them leading the next chapter of our story.
We recently caught up with them to learn more about their journey, passions and perspectives ~ and invite you to do the same by reading their Q&A below.
Q: What drew you to this role?
Expanding our experience and knowledge base with the Royal Madikwe service and product offered was a big attraction, as well as the challenge to maintain and improve on certain aspects of the Royal experience.
Q: What’s your favourite part of lodge life?
GREAT coffee! But seriously? Meeting new people from all around the world, sharing our amazing country’s fauna and flora, and the genuine smiles and “thank yous” when the guests depart ~ and you just know that the Royal Madikwe experience and African bush has left a lifetime impression.
Q: In your view, what makes the Royal Madikwe experience so unique?
The natural passion in each staff member to deliver a great service in their respective areas of operation stands out and is obvious in the experience our guests receive.
Q: Is there a guest moment or wildlife encounter that stands out in your memory?
Adri and I have had many wonderful experiences over the years. To pinpoint one would be unfair to Mother Nature and all the amazing guests that we have met over the years… But this makes me think of a Red Toad and a big burly guest wanting to take a shower. The Toad had decided that the shower floor was a suitable habitat for his needs… sorry, I digress, but come visit us and we can surely share some stories!
Q: When you’re not managing the lodge, how do you like to spend your downtime?
Spending time with our two adult children. Family and friends are important for us and, being typical South Africans, traditional “braais” with good company, cold drinks, and sunshine are high on the list of priorities. Adri is a bit of a beach fanatic and I love mountain biking and running. We both enjoy keeping fit.
Q: What do you hope guests take away from their stay at Royal Madikwe?
A genuine feeling of having received the best service possible, coupled with an appreciation and better understanding of African nature and what it offers and means to all of us. Kick your shoes off and make yourself at home. Arrive as a guest and leave as a Royal friend!
