Some experiences are worth returning to. For Mark and Judith of Travelmonster, their second visit to Royal Madikwe wasn’t simply another destination on the list but rather a deeper immersion into a place that had already left its mark.
As creative directors turned full-time content creators, the duo have spent years travelling the world in search of meaningful experiences. Through their platform, they share the planet’s immense beauty with a growing global audience, guided by a philosophy rooted in immersive and intentional travel.
“Returning to Royal Madikwe felt less like a trip and more like a true homecoming,” they share. “Being greeted by those same warm smiles from the staff is a level of hospitality that stays with you long after you leave.”
This time, their experience unfolded at a steadier pace: less about capturing the next big sighting and more about allowing each moment to breathe. It was within this stillness that some of their most touching memories were made.
One such moment captured the raw unpredictability of the wild: a tense interaction between a jackal and a hyena trying to enjoy the remains of an impala left behind after a wild dog kill. What followed was both gritty and fascinating, as the hyena attempted to hide its prize in a nearby mud hole only to lose it beneath the surface, notwithstanding a few frantic attempts to retrieve it.
“It was an incredible sight,” they recall. “A vivid reminder of how unpredictable and raw the bush can be.”
For Mark and Judith, however, storytelling extends far beyond a single frame. “Anyone can take a photo of an animal,” they explain, “but we try to capture the feeling: the low, vibrating rumble of an elephant herd approaching the waterhole, or the crackle of the fire as stories are shared under a canopy of stars... To go beyond the visuals, you have to stop looking through the lens for a moment and actually feel the rhythm of the place.”
It’s this philosophy that resonates so naturally with the Royal experience. A safari here is not simply observed; it is felt.
“For someone dreaming of their first safari,” they add, “what makes it truly worth it is the profound connection to nature. At Royal Madikwe, you are not just a spectator; you are fully immersed.”
And for those hoping to capture a few memorable moments of their own? “Patience is your most important piece of equipment,” they advise. “The most incredible shots, like our hyena in the mud hole, do not happen the second you pull up; they happen when you sit quietly and allow the animals to forget you are there. Also, do not forget to put the camera down occasionally. Sometimes the most memorable capture is the one you take with your own eyes, tucked away in your heart."
We're incredibly excited to share more of the Travelmonster’s visuals across our social platforms in the coming weeks. If you aren’t already following along, we invite you to join us and experience Madikwe in all its beauty through their lens.
