World Sustainability Day is observed every year on the last Wednesday of October. At The Royal, sustainability begins with mindfulness: a quiet awareness that every choice we make has an impact. From the way we grow our food to how we conduct our safaris, each detail is guided by a respect for the land and the wildlife it sustains.
Our organic herb and vegetable garden is living testament to this philosophy. Lovingly tended by hand, it provides our kitchen with a steady supply of fresh produce. From crisp greens to fragrant herbs, every ingredient is harvested thoughtfully, reducing packaging waste while ensuring that every meal tells a story of care and connection to the earth.
We also take deliberate steps to minimise our environmental footprint ~ from discouraging single-use plastics and providing refillable Royal Madikwe water bottles to designing menus around what’s local and in season.
Beyond the kitchen, our guides lead with the same ethos of respect, always mindful to observe wildlife without disrupting their natural rhythm. Wherever possible, our lodge also partners with nearby farmers, producers, and artisans, ensuring that the benefits of tourism ripple outward into our community.
To exist in this wilderness is both a privilege and a responsibility. Through conscious choices, we strive to ensure that the beauty of Madikwe endures for those who walk here today and those who will one day follow.
